China dominates global steel production, accounting for 54% of total output in 2023, but this comes with significant carbon emissions, with the steel industry alone contributing over 16% of China's CO2 emissions. Traditional steelmaking heavily relies on metalurgical coal, generating substantial carbon dioxide. To meet China's "Dual Carbon Targets", drastic emission reductions are essential in steel production.
Internationally, green trade barriers are increasing, posing challenges such as cost hikes and reduced competitiveness for Chinese steel exporters. The coking industry, crucial for steelmaking, faces similar pressures as a major part of China's coke production, centered in Shanxi Province.
Recognizing these challenges, international organizations like SteelWatch are collaborating with Shanxi's PACS Green Culture Center and Nenglian to facilitate global discussions on steel industry decarbonization. Their aim is to propose practical strategies for China's steel sector, integrating competitive and sustainable approaches amidst global transition challenges.
