Amidst global efforts to shift away from fossil fuels, China has committed to peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Shanxi Province, China's major coal producer and supplier, has a particular contribution yet hard challenge to deliver its own share for China to achive the "Dual Carbon Targets".
Shanxi must transform all coal-dependent industries, particularly coal power, coking, and steel, towards low-carbon and eventually zero-carbon methods, and accelerate the adoption of clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. The ambition of this transition goes beyond energy. Shanxi needs an overall economic and social transition towards a coal-free future. The ambition, meanwhile, also goes beyond Shanxi. Its realization relies on coordinated support from other provinces and cities in China.
Achieving these goals requires nationwide cooperation, including coordinated efforts to transition energy supply and demand, establish carbon trading rules, and provide policy, financial, and technical support. This collaborative approach not only supports Shanxi's transition but also contributes to China's broader "Dual Carbon Targets" strategy.
